Business: One World Award - presented at the IFOAM Organic World Congress

Modena and Legau (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - The first international One World Award (OWA) was awarded to Lal Emmanuel from Sri Lanka. The OWA statue along with a 25,000 Euro check was presented to Mr Emmanuel for several sustainable projects.
The honorary "One World Award" for lifetime achievements went to Professor Dr. Engelhard Boehncke from Germany. Patroness of the OWA ceremony in Modena (Italy) was Mrs Renate Knast, former German Minister of Agriculture.

The first international "One World Award" and the "One World Lifetime Achievement Award" were presented in a festive and joyful ceremony with about 850 guests at the occasion of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) World Congress in Modena/Italy. The award was initiated by Joseph Wilhelm, founder and Managing Director of RAPUNZEL NATURKOST AG. The OWA honours positive, sustainable examples of globalization as defined by the three columns of sustainability: economic, ecological and social aspects.

Joseph Wilhelm presented the artistic OWA statue and the 25.000 Euro check - donated by RAPUNZEL NATURKOST AG - to Lal Emmanuel. "I am very happy that the jury agreed on the winner which was certainly not an easy task", emphasized the organic pioneer. Lal Emmanuel established the Nagenahiru foundation in Sri Lanka in 1991 and devoted himself to a variety of sustainable projects; among those a project that focuses on the protection and reforestation of ecologically valuable mangrove forests.

Joseph Wilhelm expressed his gratitude to IFOAM. The organization courageously and actively joined as a partner and took on the patronage of the "One World Award" initiative. He also thanked his fellow jury members Vandana Shiva (India), Tewolde Eghziaber (Ethopia), Alberto Pipo Lernoud (Argentina) and Bernward Geier who performed their jury tasks with dedication and wisdom.

Joseph Wilhelm also thanked the numerous applicants from the different continents.

The "One World Lifetime Achievement Award" was presented to Professor Dr. Engelhard Boehncke from Germany by IFOAM President Gerald A. Herrmann. The veterinarian and farmer has been a key figure in the national and international organic movement for over 50 years! He was IFOAM President for four years and helped develop organic animal husbandry guidelines that made organic animal husbandry a global alternative for a more sustainable and healthier world.

President Herrmann emphasized that "IFOAM is very honoured to present the OWA statue to Professor Dr. Engelhard Boehncke and to acknowledge his extraordinary contributions and lifetime achievements".

Patroness and guest of honour Renate Knast, former German Minister of Agriculture and Chair of the German environmental party "Bndnis 90/Die Grnen" in the German Parliament, stressed the importance of the international "One World Award" and congratulated the laureate prize winners in her speech: "These future makers show that innovative ideas and dedication are essential elements for giving globalization a positive dimension. This award hopefully encourages more people to get actively involved."

The ceremony was full of emotions. The finalists and laureates were celebrated by the guests from all over the world with roaring applause. And as the saying goes "after the price is before the price", nominations for the "One World Award 2010" will be accepted starting in the fall of 2008. The nomination deadline is the end of April 2009. The "One World Award" will be awarded by RAPUNZEL NATURKOST AG and IFOAM every
second year.

Medical/Technology: Japan approves CyberKnife system for extracranial use

Robotic radiosurgery system offers non-invasive treatment alternative for tumors anywhere in the body

Sunnyvale, Calif. (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - Accuray Incorporated (Nasdaq: ARAY), a global leader in the field of radiosurgery, announced today that Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) has granted Shonin approval of the CyberKnife(R) Robotic Radiosurgery System for use in treatment of extracranial tumors, including tumors that move with respiration. This regulatory approval dramatically expands the types of patients that can be treated with radiosurgery. As a result of this approval, the CyberKnife System may be used in Japan to treat tumors anywhere in the body, including those in the spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate.

"Japanese regulatory approval for these expanded indications is a noteworthy milestone for Accuray and significantly expands the potential for the CyberKnife System in Japan," said Eric P. Lindquist, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Accuray Incorporated. "Because customers in Japan have a long history of using the CyberKnife System for tumors in the head and neck, we are pleased that the benefits of extracranial radiosurgery will finally be realized by this important market."

The CyberKnife System offers cancer patients worldwide a pain-free, non- invasive alternative to surgery. In 1996 the CyberKnife System was first approved in Japan to treat tumors in the head and neck. Currently, there are 20 CyberKnife Systems installed throughout Japan, making it the second largest installed base of CyberKnife Systems after the United States.

Recently Accuray established an office in Tokyo, Japan to better address this strategic market. Accuray will work with its existing distributor to sell the CyberKnife System and increase patient access to its benefits.

Japan is currently facing a rapidly aging population and the incidence of lung cancer is on the rise. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in Japan. In 2003, the number of lung cancer deaths reached 41,615 (22 percent of all cancer-related deaths) in men and 15,086 deaths (12 percent of all cancer-related deaths) in women. Additionally, according to a 2006 report from global research firm, Research and Markets, Japan remains the world's second largest medical device market after the United States.

About the CyberKnife(R) Robotic Radiosurgery System

The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is the world's only robotic radiosurgery system designed to treat tumors anywhere in the body non- invasively. Using continual image guidance technology and computer controlled robotic mobility, the CyberKnife System automatically tracks, detects and corrects for tumor and patient movement in real-time throughout the treatment. This enables the CyberKnife System to deliver high-dose radiation with pinpoint precision, which minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue and eliminates the need for invasive head or body stabilization frames.

About Accuray

Accuray Incorporated (Nasdaq: ARAY), based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is a global leader in the field of radiosurgery dedicated to providing an improved quality of life and a non-surgical treatment option for those diagnosed with cancer.
Accuray develops and markets the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System, which extends the benefits of radiosurgery to include extracranial tumors, including those in the spine, lung, prostate, liver and pancreas. To date, the CyberKnife System has been used to treat more than 40,000 patients worldwide and currently more than 130 systems have been installed in leading hospitals in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Technology: SenesTech partners with Australia to stop Starvation

Arizona-based SenesTech, Inc., partners with Australia to stop Starvation due to rice shortages

San Diego (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - A new chemical fertility control technology that could substantially reduce the devastating impacts of rodents on rice production in developing countries is being featured at the BIO 2008 International Convention in San Diego, California from the 17th through the 20th of June.

SenesTech, Inc., a Flagstaff, Arizona - based corporation, is developing a technology that will target the fertility of rice field rats in Southeast Asia. If successful this technology will result in increased crop yields, an increase in food supplies globally, and will improve the quality of life for hundreds of millions of lives within a few years.

"It is impossible to overstate the importance of this technology," said Dr. Loretta P. Mayer, one of the company's founders and inventors of the technology. "One fifth to one third of the world's food supply never reaches the table due to the deleterious impacts of rodents. They damage crops both pre-and post-harvest by not only eating the grain but damaging it with urine and feces pollution. They also spread many debilitating diseases. While this problem has persisted for centuries, it is possible that we may be able to start reversing this process. Research shows that just a ten per cent reduction in the rice rat population can feed over 380 million
people. The numbers are simply staggering," she said.

The development of the technology is being completed at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, while further characterization of animal models is being conducted at Arizona State University in Tempe. The technology is built on patents filed by the University of Arizona in Tucson, on which Dr. Mayer is co-inventor. This statewide effort reflects the mission of the Arizona Bioscience Roadmap, which provides Arizona scientists with a conduit for collaborative research and technology transfer.

"It is impressive to witness the level of collaboration and innovation that occur within our universities and communities," said Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. "These advances -- which potentially have a significant impact on the planet -- are possible when we create the infrastructure for and foster science-based projects and discoveries."

To complete development of the environmentally neutral product called "ContraPest(TM)", and to provide for efficient distribution, the Arizona-based biotech company has signed an international agreement with the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IACRC) in Canberra, the capital of Australia.
This Centre is part of an Australian government science innovation program that brings together research institutions, industry partners and business enterprises to accelerate technology transfer and the delivery of new products into the marketplace.

Rats, insects, and weeds rank as the three major pests of small landholder farmers in developing countries. A pair of rodents and their offspring can potentially produce over 600 offspring in just three months. When food supplies are plentiful, rodents reach unprecedented numbers. Today, it is not unusual for smallholder rice farmers to report chronic yield losses of 20-30 per cent per year, rising to 50 per cent or even total crop loss in certain areas. This places an enormous strain on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in developing countries. In turn, such losses compound the current food crisis, placing a heavy burden on the tens of millions of landless and urban poor. SenesTech believes the technology has the potential to have a significant impact in the 13 countries that produce over 84 per cent of the world's rice supply, including China, India, and other Southeast Asian nations, which will be SenesTech's first customers.

Dr. Mayer, along with Dr. Cheryl Dyer, and Dr. Timothy Vail, SenesTech's scientific team, has developed this environmentally safe alternative to poison that can be used to sterilize the rice field rat. The technology accelerates the natural reproductive aging process in the rat resulting in sterility or reproductive "senescence". These scientists, all from Northern Arizona University, have teamed up with Dr. Lyn Hinds from the IACRC and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia and Drs. Sudarmaji at the Indonesian Centre for Rice Research in Sukamandi, Indonesia to begin assessment of the product in Indonesian-based studies this fall.

"I am dedicated to addressing starvation with this technology and changing the livelihoods of the rural poor," said Everett Hale, CEO. Hale was recruited by the company to lead the international effort and build on the company's core technology.

"I never knew the extent to which governments had to use poison to prevent famine. A percentage of poison in any food supply is not acceptable. We are losing lives and the environment. Through our technology, we can now change the world and help feed its people."

For additional information on ContraPest(TM) contact Everett Hale at ehale@senestech.com or visit http://www.senestech.com.

ContraPest(TM) is projected to be available for commercial use in the Spring of 2010.

ABOUT (SenesTech, Inc.) SenesTech is a platform technology company located in Flagstaff, Arizona specializing in fertility control products for wildlife population control including dogs and cats. Other products in the development pipeline include ChemSpay(TM), a non-surgical spay product for female dogs and cats.

Metal/Mining: Dupont raises titanium dioxide prices

DuPont Titanium Technologies raises titanium dioxide prices due to rising cost increases

Wilmington, Del. (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - DuPont Titanium Technologies today announced its second global price increase for titanium dioxide in two weeks in an attempt to keep pace with rapidly rising costs of energy and raw materials.

Increases announced today become effective on July 15. These increases, of approximately $150 (USD) per ton, are in addition to those announced two weeks ago. Those increases take effect on July 1.

"We believed the increases announced earlier in June would be adequate to offset rising costs, but with oil now approaching $140 (USD) per barrel, there is simply no alternative to this action," said Richard C. Olson, vice president and general manager -- DuPont Titanium Technologies.

"We don't take these unprecedented steps lightly because we know they will travel eventually down the entire value chain." Olson said the cumulative effect of increases announced since the beginning of 2008 would result in third quarter DuPont titanium dioxide prices that are approximately 15 percent higher in U.S. dollars compared to the beginning of this year. He said specifics of the latest increases will be announced shortly in the various regions.

DuPont Titanium Technologies is the world's largest manufacturer of titanium dioxide, serving customers globally in the coatings, paper and plastics industries. The company operates plants at DeLisle, Miss.; New Johnsonville, Tenn.; Edge Moor, Del.; Altamira, Mexico; and Kuan Yin, Taiwan; all of which use the chloride manufacturing process. High-Tech: Vietnam: Asia's next rising tiger - technology-driven nation

Singapore (BUSINESS WIRE) - Frost & Sullivan's Semiconductors Automation & Electronics of Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific (http://www.electronics.frost.com) will host an exclusive live briefing on the Vietnam: Asia's next Rising Tiger as a Technology-Driven Nation on June 25th, 2008 at 11:00 hrs (GMT+ 08:00hrs) Singapore time.

Vietnam is emerging as an important Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS)/Original Device Manufacturers (ODM) and semiconductor manufacturing services destination. In January 2007, Vietnam entered the World Trade Organization.
Vietnam's low-cost of labor, availability of trainable local population and favorable government policies are attracting global EMS/ODM companies to set-up operations in this country.

The government's emphasis on making electronics a key export earner is pushing Vietnam to migrate to the path of high-tech industry. The country is also experiencing rapid increase in semiconductor consumption. Many investors feel that it is easier to do business in Vietnam than in China due to lesser regulatory hassles and government business-friendly policies.
The country has been witnessing double-digit growth rate. In recent years, electronics and IT industries have recorded the average growth rate of 25-35% a year.

Vietnam will soon emerge as a tough competitor to other well established neighbors in Asia. It is to been seen if Vietnam will emerge as a viable alternative.

Highlights of this analyst briefing includes an analysis of Drivers and Challengers for Vietnam's EMS/ODM and Semiconductor Industries, Education System and Labor Force, Vietnam's Semiconductor Consumption, Leading OEMs in Vietnam and also a discussion on macroeconomic indicators such as GDP growth, FDI inflow, and labor costs. We will also provide an update of

Technology: Toshiba's new variability aware modeling for design layout to boost gate density

- New technique for next-generation 45nm CMOS technology boosts gate density to 2.6 times higher than that of 65nm CMOS technology--

MULTIMEDIA AVAILABLE: http://www.businesswire.com/cgi-binmmg.cgi?eid=5712716

Tokyo (BUSINESS WIRE) - Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced that it has developed a new compact model for circuit design that achieves higher gate density and improved cost-performance in next-generation 45nm CMOS technology.

By applying this technique, gate density for 45nm CMOS technology is boosted to 2.6 times higher than that of 65nm CMOS technology, and surpassing the gain of 2.0 times that is the typically expected technology trend in generational migration.

Circuit design layout, particularly proximity (proximity effect), is the dominant factor in the variability of transistor performance, and gate density also plays an important role in chip cost. By applying this technique to the design in 45nm CMOS technology, Toshiba achieves both high performance and cost competitiveness in system LSI.

The newly developed technique was reported on June 18th at Session 9.3 of Symposia on VLSI Technology 2008, in Honolulu,
Hawaii, USA.

Toshiba has developed the new technique, which predicts the performance of each transistor individually, by focusing on factors dependent on circuit layout. In 65nm CMOS technology, gate length, gate width and the distance between the gate and isolation area (see Fig. 1) are considered in design, as major factors affecting transistor performance.

In advanced 45nm CMOS technology and beyond, additional factors such as the space of gates and locations of contacts (see Fig. 2) are modeled and fed into the design. Toshiba's new technique estimates each transistor characteristics and feeds them into the circuit design. As a result, Toshiba has achieved higher gate density without increasing the margin for variability in design.

Advances in process technology have required shorter gate lengths in CMOS process technology, and application of stress enhancement techniques1 has proved effective as a means to improve transistor performance.

However, from the 45nm CMOS generation, gate length scaling will advance significantly, and the application of stress enhancement techniques will produce complicated variability as a result of dependence on layout in the design. This issue could be evaded in earlier generations by setting an additional design margin for safer design or by restricting the pattern and design. However, this approach sacrifices improvement in gate density and is insufficient for the 45nm CMOS generation and beyond.

1 Stress enhancement technique: Increasing carrier mobility in CMOS transistor is an effective means to obtain better transistor performance. Carrier mobility can be modulated by applying strain at transistors. Toshiba new technique utilizes this phenomenon. Various techniques for effectively imposing stress at the transistor channel area have been proposed, for example, forming stress films over transistors, or embedding stress films on both sides of the transistor gates. However, these stress enhancement techniques create a complicated proximity effect dependant on actual transistor layout and causes concerns for increased variability in transistor performance.

Environment: Rain Bird's 5000 PRS Rotor receives Australian certification

Rain Bird's 5000 PRS Rotor receives Australia's smart approved WaterMark Certification in recognition of its proven water saving performance

The Rotor's built-In pressure regulating technology exemplifies the intelligent use of water as it delivers up to 45% water savings when compared to competitive rotors, according to an independent testing panel

Azusa, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - Rain Bird, the worldwide leading manufacturer and provider of irrigation products and services announced today that its 5000 PRS (pressure regulating stem) Rotor sprinkler has been awarded the Smart Approved WaterMark Certification, Australia's outdoor water saving labeling program for products that help reduce water use around the home.

Heralded for its in-stem pressure regulator which prevents water loss caused by uneven water pressure and Rain Bird's exclusive Rain Curtain? nozzle technology which delivers thick water droplets in a uniform consistent pattern, an independent testing panel confirmed that the Rain Bird 5000 PRS delivers 15% to 45% water savings when compared to non-pressure regulated competitive products.

Facing what some experts have described as the worst drought in 1,000 years, four associations - the Australian Water Association, Irrigation Australia Ltd, the Nursery and Garden Industry, Australia and the Water Services Association of Australia - developed the Smart Approved WaterMark Certification Program in partnership with Australian government stakeholders. Their efforts empower lawn and garden professionals and consumers with the knowledge they need to identify and buy only those products that aid in reducing water consumption. All Smart Approved WaterMark Certified products are evaluated and tested for water savings by an independent expert panel made up of technical experts with extensive experience in landscape, horticulture, plumbing and other water related industries.

As the only gear driven rotor to receive the Australian Smart Approved WaterMark, Rain Bird's 5000 PRS Rotor's performance was measured against competitive rotors in a series of water pressure tests designed to replicate common "real world" scenarios. The results of rigorous testing and evaluation by an independent third party revealed that the 5000 PRS demonstrates water savings in the order of 15% to 45% when compared to non-pressure regulated competitive rotor products.

"The 5000 PRS is engineered to maximize water dispersion and uniformity, despite variations in water pressure that can otherwise cause havoc on an irrigation system and the landscape," said Heather Kraus, Rain Bird product manager. "The 5000 PRS combines Rain Bird's award-winning Rain Curtain nozzle technology with an in-stem pressure regulator that effectively eliminates misting, head-to-head pressure variations, and improves the overall uniformity of water distribution enabling homeowners and landscape professionals to maximize water savings while preserving a healthy landscape."

Bolstering Rain Bird's global commitment to developing innovative, water-efficient irrigation products for do-it-yourselfer's and professionals, the 5000 PRS Rotor is the latest addition to Rain Bird's growing list of Smart Approved WaterMark certified products that also includes Rain Bird's Irrigation Supplement, Rain Bird's Rotary Nozzles, Rain Bird Rain Sensor and the Rain Bird Maxicom2 Central Control System.

"There is no better proving ground for water saving products like the 5000 PRS Rotorsprinkler than the unforgiving climate of Australia," said Rain Bird Corporate Marketing Director Dave Johnson. "Southern Australia faces some of the worst drought conditions of any inhabited region on the globe, and reduced water availability presents a significant challenge for homeowners and landscape professionals as they strive to preserve landscapes while maximizing every drop of water. As a global leader in irrigation, the Smart Approved WaterMark is further testament of our commitment to leveraging our expertise and innovative technologies to drive the development of products that embody The Intelligent Use of Water."

Bio Science: Real Clone Wars: International Dog-Fight over Cloning Rights

hReal Clone Wars:
International Dog-Fight over Cloning Rights Between BioArts International & RNL

Mill Valley, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - The CEOs of two American companies in the cloning field, BioArts International and Start Licensing, today independently announced their opposition to the unlicensed activity of a third company based in South Korea: RNL Bio.

RNL Bio recently announced the cloning of dogs intended for detecting cancer, offering to sell them for USD 500,000 apiece, after previously announcing a plan to clone pet dogs. However, animal cloning technology including that used by RNL - is patented throughout most of the developed world, including South Korea, and these patents are controlled by Start Licensing. BioArts has the sole, worldwide license from Start to clone dogs.

"RNL has no right to offer this service, and is practicing black market cloning," said Lou Hawthorne, CEO of BioArts.
"Good international relations in the 21st Century depend on respect for intellectual property. By claiming the right to exploit technology that they did not invent and do not own, RNL demonstrates arrogance on an international scale. If RNL does not respect Western patents, does this mean that Western companies are free to disregard patents granted to Korean companies."

"Start will consider all available legal remedies to protect and preserve its patent rights," said Jonathan Thatcher, President of Start Licensing, "including the remedy of blocking importation of products produced under the patented methods into jurisdictions where such remedies are available.""Individuals who wish to clone a beloved dog have only one legal option," said Hawthorne, "and that's our Best Friends Again program, described at www.bestfriendsagain.com.

Organizations that wish to clone dogs for other purposes, including medical applications, should contact BioArts."

The role of Seoul National University (SNU) in this developing situation is unclear. JoongAng Daily, a South Korean newspaper, quoted SNU officials on May 20th as saying they were canceling plans to form a commercial dog cloning entity due to concerns over Start Licensing's patents; however, ongoing dog cloning activities of RNL are allegedly enabled by University facilities and staff several of whom are major shareholders in RNL.

BioArts International partnered with Sooam Biotech Research Foundation of South Korea following Sooam's successful cloning in 2007 of Hawthorne's family dog, Missy fulfilling the world's first commercial dog cloning order. BioArts recently announced plans to sell 5 dog cloning slots in an auction to be held July 5th-9th. Details can be found at www.bestfriendsagain.com.

More information on BioArts is available at http://www.bioarts.com.

HFCL Infotel Ltd conducts mobile broadband network trial with NextWave's state-of-the-srt Wi-Fi infrastructure solution
Advanced outdoor Wi-Fi network utilizes NextWave Micro and Pico Base Stations for cost-effective, scalable mobile broadband performance in Chandigarh

Singapore - NextWave Wireless Inc. (NASDAQ: WAVE), a global provider of mobile multimedia and wireless broadband technologies, today announced that HFCL Infotel Ltd., a telecommunications service provider in the Punjab state of northern India, is conducting a large-scale outdoor Wi-Fi network trial using NextWave's innovative MBW 2000 series micro cell and MBW 1000 series pico cell Wi-Fi base stations in the capital city of Chandigarh.

The trial, which will be deployed this summer, will measure the capacity, throughput and performance of NextWave's carrier-grade outdoor Wi-Fi networking solution, and serve as the first step to upgrading HFCL's mobile broadband capabilities, introducing a new level of mobile accessibility and customer services to the region.
More than 261 million people in India own mobile phones, making it the second largest wireless market in the world, and one of the fastest growing with more than 10 million new subscribers in March 2008.

Laptop sales have also been increasing significantly, with a 59 percent rise in sales volume in the first half of fiscal 2007-2008 (according to the Manufacturer's Association for Information Technology).

The demand for mobile broadband computing and access continues to grow and requires innovative new mobile broadband solutions, with Wi-Fi playing an increasingly larger role.
"HFCL Infotel Ltd. believes in giving the best of services to the consumer on the most advanced and customer centric platform possible, the synergies with NextWave will help HFCL Infotel Ltd. give to its consumers the next level of connectivity," said COO of HFCL Infotel Ltd. Mr G. D. Singh.

"We are pleased to work with NextWave and look forward to a relationship which will set new benchmarks for performance and customer delight."

"NextWave believes that India presents an incredible opportunity and new frontier for high-performance mobile broadband networks and we are proud to provide HFCL with the technology and solutions to meet the demands of this fast-growing market," said Bill Jones, CEO of NextWave Network Products.

"Our outdoor Wi-Fi base stations and innovative smart technology takes performance to the next level while fundamentally redefining the economics of mobile broadband service delivery."
NextWave's Wi-Fi base stations are powered by innovative, patent-pending xRF adaptive beamforming smart antenna technology, purpose-built to boost subscriber performance and densities and reduce interference.

With xRF technology, carriers can deploy fewer network devices, and still provide greater range, capacity and coverage than competing solutions.
Especially in densely populated cities like Chandigarh, this translates into significant and immediate CAPEX and OPEX savings. HFCL is currently performing the test using NextWave MBW 2000 series micro cell base stations, featuring dual-radio xRF-powered 802.11 b/g access, and MBW 1000 pico cell base stations, with single-radio xRF-powered 802.11 b/g access.

The trial area extends over a square kilometer over Chandigarh, in a mostly residential area that covers more than 1000 subscribers. Upon successful trial completion HFCL expects to expand network coverage throughout Chandigarh.

Technology: Email marketing more crucial in reaching Asia-Pacific consumers

New Survey Results Find Nearly One-Third of the Respondents would Always Respond to Targeted Promotional E-Mail

Hong Kong, (ANTARA News/Xinhua-PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - A survey conducted by Epsilon International and Return Path has revealed that email-based marketing resonates strongly with consumers across the Asia Pacific region and, alongside traditional mediums, is fast becoming one of the key ways to reach consumers.

In one of the most significant findings, nearly one in three respondents (32%) said that they would "always" respond to targeted, promotional e-mails.

The survey, which was carried out in February 2008 throughout the Asia-Pacific region, surveyed 1,169 participants and sought to discover consumer email habits and attitudes to permission email marketing and spam.

"Through client campaigns across Asia Pacific, we know that consumer interaction and responses to targeted permission based communications are high, and drive significant returns for our clients," said Dominic Powers, senior vice president, Asia Pacific, Epsilon International.

"This survey further supports the fact that consumers respond to email marketing if it is directed to the right person, at the right time, and with the right message."

Another survey finding pointed to the increasing acceptance of electronic marketing when used in a controlled and targeted manner, with 44% of the respondents in India would use e-mail coupons to buy products online or offline.

"E-mail marketing is rapidly becoming the preferred method for consumers to be reached by marketers," Powers said.

"Aside from the obvious environmental angles, consumers are now savvy enough to realise that targeted campaigns can offer them deals or savings above the typical promotional offers they find in their letterbox at home."

In addition, the survey revealed the speeds at which average Indians are accessing the Internet.

In India, a large proportion (72% home and 53% work) said they accessed the Net at speeds of 1.5Mbps or less. In contrast, in Japan and Hong Kong, over 70 per cent and 63 per cent of email users are using high speed 10Mbps at home and at work.

Other key findings in the survey:

-- In India, personal email retrieval peaks between 9am and 11am as well as 9pm at night, with each hour accounting for 10% or more of the respondents in India.

-- A low usage rate of mobile devices for email in India (14%) was revealed but was not as low as in Australia, with a reported usage of only 6%. Mainland Chinese respondents have the highest uptake (34%) of mobile device usage for email, followed by Hong Kong at 29% and Japan at 27%.

-- Promotional emails increase brand loyalty according to almost two-thirds of the respondents (63%) in India; while every other Indian respondent (52%) said they had made more purchases after receiving promotional emails.

-- Customers interact on relevancy. Many email users in India (63%) are willing to share personal information if they believe it drives relevant and more targeted offers. The same view is shared among half or more respondents in other countries, except in Hong Kong, where more respondents (63%) said they would not want to release additional personal details regardless of the offers.

-- Irrelevancy is the new spam. In addition to unsolicited emails, many respondents consider that the definition of spam also includes promotional emails or e-newsletters which they subscribed to, but which they find no longer engaging or that fail address to their needs. About 34% of respondents in China concur with this view of spam while only 11% in Australia do.

Yet users suffer similarly on the time used to clear spam. Among the two-thirds of the respondents in India (65%) having reported spam, 68% are doing so at least three times a week.

Methodology

The 2008 Epsilon International & Return Path Asia Pacific Consumer Email Survey was conducted online during February 2008. Email users were polled on their email usage habits as well as their attitudes to promotional emails and SPAM, or unsolicited commercial messages.

The survey questions were provided in three languages: English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

The survey sample set was composed of a mix of panellists from 7 territories covering Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore, provided by Authentic Response, a division of Return Path Inc.

Members of the response panel were registered in a double opt-in process recruited over time through a wide range of websites and screened continuously to avoid skewing the research results.

Survey responses were validated using Authentic Responses proprietary technology.

Questionable responses and potential professional survey takers were removed to ensure the integrity of the results.

There were 1,179 questionnaires collected. Ten duplicates were discarded. A total of 1,169 unique questionnaires were completed by respondents from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Malaysia.

All respondents have at least one active email account from home or at work.

The composite regional findings are weighted accordingly to ensure reliable geographic representation of the internet user population (Note) of the responding countries.
