Pfizer Animal Health to acquire Catapult Genetics and Bovigen

Pfizer Animal Health to acquire Catapult Genetics and Bovigen Gene Marker Technology to support global livestock producers

New York (BUSINESS WIRE) - Pfizer Animal Health today announced it will acquire two market-leading livestock genomics companies: Catapult Genetics, Pty., Ltd., focused on developing and commercializing innovative livestock DNA tests and gene markers to assist global food producers, processors and retailers in improving profitability and quality in the global food chain; and Bovigen, LLC, which markets DNA technology, including Catapult's products in the U.S. and throughout Canada, Central America and South America.

Terms of the agreements were not disclosed. The acquisitions are expected to close by the end of this month. The two companies will continue to market products and services to their own customers as well as Pfizer Animal Health customers.

"This is a strategic initiative that places Pfizer at the forefront of livestock gene marker R&D and enhances Pfizer's ability to offer more complete solutions to global livestock producers," said Juan Ramon Alaix, president, Pfizer Animal Health.

Current genetic tests are focused on productivity and carcass quality, while future genetic tests may one day allow producers to better predict disease in individual animals, thus helping veterinarians and producers target medicines to livestock that need it most, Alaix said.

"Catapult's ongoing product R&D is based on core technology platforms developed in collaboration with research groups in Australia and New Zealand," said Gerard Davis, chief executive officer, Catapult Genetics. "Now with Pfizer's added resources and capabilities, we expect livestock producers will begin to see an enhanced range of genetic tools. For sheep and beef cattle producers in Australia and New Zealand there will be benefits from a continued focus on their needs as well as access to new and improved products," Davis said.

Pfizer will continue to access and draw on the best R&D from Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., and Europe. As novel marker panels are discovered and developed, Pfizer plans to introduce new products and services to livestock producers.

Expanded Support to Beef Producers"In the U.S., Pfizer also will be able to enhance the development and uptake of new genetic markers identified through Bovigen's participation in The Carcass Merit Project with Texas A&M University and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. This project, partially funded by the Beef Checkoff Program, is designed to generate new and important markers for U.S. cattle producers," said Victor Castellon, chief executive officer, Bovigen.

"DNA markers allow beef producers to make better management decisions, to improve the quality of their herd by selecting animals with certain high-valued genetic traits, and to create a long-term, positive economic impact for their business," said Nigel Evans, senior director of business innovation for Pfizer Animal Health, who will lead the Catapult and Bovigen businesses for Pfizer.

Genetic information also can help guarantee food quality ? beef tenderness or well-marbled beef. Gene markers help beef producers to identify better breeding stock.

"Our move today expands Pfizer's already strong commitment to promoting livestock health and safe, high-quality food around the world," Evans said.

CDMA dominates ultra low-cost handset market in India

CDMA dominates ultra low-cost handset market in India Yankee Group report also cites low-cost CDMA handsets as key driver towards increasing teledensity in the region

Costa Mesa, Calif. (PRIME NEWSWIRE) - The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that, based on a Yankee Group study, CDMA dominates the ultra low-cost handset (ULCH) market in India. Research also suggests that the availability of low-cost CDMA handsets has been a key driver towards increasing teledensity in the region. The Yankee Group study, entitled "CDMA Imports Driving Ultra Low-Cost Handsets in India: Price Trending Analysis," is available now on the CDG Web site: www.cdg.org/technology/3g/resource yankeegrp_ultralowhandsets.asp.

"Availability of low-cost CDMA handsets changed the competitive landscape in India," said BV Raman, CDG's representative in India. "In India and other parts of the globe, this healthy competition is making wireless telecommunications more affordable and is contributing not only to CDMA's rapid expansion but increasing teledensity worldwide. Given CDMA's aggressive and highly economical evolution path, the strength of the ULCH market has positioned CDMA2000(r) operators to benefit from the Indian government's imminent spectrum allocation for 3G."

The Yankee Group report, based on comprehensive import data from Indian government sources between January and October 2007, made a number of key findings:

* 62% of all handsets imported into India were below $50
* 78% of all sub-$50 imports were CDMA models from 13 vendors
* 94% of CDMA imports were below $50
* Total CDMA import volumes exceed GSM by a margin of 52% to 48%
* The average selling price (ASP) for all imported CDMA handsets is 68% lower than the GSM market average -- on average over the period, the cost of CDMA handsets across the entire device portfolio is $72 less than GSM

The Yankee Group also determined that India's total mobile teledensity has increased as a result of the availability and variety of CDMA ULCHs from multiple vendors. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), GSM and CDMA subscriber bases grew 13.4% and 12.12% respectively in Q3, 2007. The TRAI data indicates an increasing growth rate for CDMA subscribers, up from 10.05% in the previous quarter.

"A number of factors including, but not limited to service provider competition, service quality, brand affinity, effective marketing and distribution, device vendor competition, increasing per-capita GDP, and general demand factors including choice, are driving growth," commented John Jackson, vice president of Yankee Group's Enabling Technologies Group. "CDMA has helped create this healthy growth environment. Trending in the data analyzed is clear. We expect CDMA handsets to continue dominating the low cost market for the foreseeable future."

Low-cost CDMA handset pricing is not limited to India. More than 82 very low-end (VLE) CDMA2000 handsets (under US$50 wholesale) are available globally from 19 suppliers in highly competitive emerging markets such as Bangladesh, China, Ghana, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Venezuela.
Very low-cost CDMA handsets are also becoming available in developed markets with the debut of the "Cricket EZ" handset sold by Cricket Communications in the United States for $49.99
-- a trend which will rapidly transform the wireless industry.

3M to Headquarter Optical Systems Business in Asia

St. Paul, Minn. - 3M announced today that it will headquarter its Optical Systems business in North Asia, effective immediately, as part of the company's overall strategy to accelerate growth by moving closer to customers.

"The move will improve 3M's ability to respond to LCD panel customers more quickly in this fast-paced market and helps ensure long-term sustainable success for our enduring franchise," said Mike Kelly, executive vice president, 3M Display and Graphics.

"As the pioneer of microreplicated and multilayer brightness enhancement films, 3M is committed to protecting and building the optical film business over the long term."

In this fast-paced industry, headquartering the business in Asia will further improve customer intimacy and response rates.
3M announced last fall that its LCD optical film business would undergo a transition to expand its product offering beyond high performance, high price films to include basic performance, competitively priced films for all segments of the LCD industry.

Long-time leader Andy Wong told employees today that he plans to retire from 3M. Throughout his distinguished 34-year career, Wong's personal commitment and dedication culminated in the growth of one of the most successful businesses for 3M.

"Andy's remarkable leadership was instrumental in building 3M's core optical film business and its tremendous growth over the last several years," Kelly said.

Jim Bauman will be the new vice president and general manager for 3M Optical Systems Division. Bauman has held leadership positions for 3M in Thailand, Electro and Communications in Austin, and most recently, as vice president and general manager for the Automotive Division in St.Paul.

While Bauman will manage the division from North Asia, business operations will continue to be deployed globally.

3M's optical films are used to make electronic displays, such as LCD TVs, laptops and cell phones, significantly brighter than displays without enhancement films, more energy efficient and more vibrant in real-life lighting conditions by optimizing and recycling light.

By enabling vivid, lifelike pictures in environments ranging from natural daylight to a darkened room, optical films from 3M offer consumers more flexibility to use their electronic devices in a variety of locations without sacrificing picture quality.

About 3M

A recognized leader in research and development, 3M produces thousands of innovative products for dozens of diverse markets.
3M's core strength is applying its more than 40 distinct technology platforms often in combination to a wide array of customer needs. With $24 billion in sales, 3M employs 75,000 people worldwide and has operations in more than 60 countries.

`Virtual Water` innovator awarded 2008 Stockholm Water Prize

Stockholm, (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - Professor John Anthony Allan from King's College London and the School of Oriental and African Studies, a pioneer of concepts key to the understanding and communication of water issues and how they are linked to agriculture, climate change, economics and politics, was named the 2008 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate.

People do not only consume water when they drink it or take a shower. In 1993, Prof. Allan made a major breakthrough in how to demonstrate this by introducing "virtual water," a measurement of the water that is embedded in the production of foods and consumer products. Behind that morning cup of coffee, there are 140 litres of water that was consumed to grow, produce, package, and ship the beans. That is roughly equal to the amount of water used by an average person in England for all their daily drinking and household needs. One hamburger holds some 2,400 litres. An average American consumes over 6,000 litres of virtual water every day; over triple the average Chinese.

These insights gained through Prof. Allan's work have made major impacts on global trade policy and research and has redefined discourse in water policy and management. Water intensive commodities can be traded from places where high returns to water can be achieved to economies that cannot produce as efficiently.

This has influenced national water and trade policies and has significant implications for balancing global water resources. Application of the virtual water concept provides the potential to use trade to alleviate regional water scarcity and make water resources use more efficient. This both improves capacity for sustainable management of global water resources for future generations and reduces the risk that nations go to war over scarce water resources.

Prof. Allan, a prolific author and educator, is a leading expert on global water resources, conflict resolution, and the Middle East and North Africa region. He has been described as one of the most influential thinkers in the water sector today.

The Stockholm Water Prize, presented annually by the Stockholm Water Foundation, is worth USD 150,000. The prize will be presented during the World Water Week in Stockholm, on August 21 in the Stockholm City Hall. H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is the Patron of the Stockholm Water Prize.

When completed, the Trump International Hotel & Tower will be the tallest residential building in Canada. It will feature 261 luxury hotel condominiums, 118 condominium residences and a concierge-attended sky lobby on the 31st level.

"We are proud to bring on board a worldwide leader like Otis," said Val Levitan, president and CEO of Talon International Development Inc., co-developer of the project. "With its wealth of experience and innovative technologies, it is simply the only elevator manufacturer capable of matching the standards we expect for our property."

Otis will provide a mix of Elevonic(R) 411 gearless, geared and Gen2(R) elevator systems. Gearless elevators are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than conventional drive systems, while the Gen2 system is up to 50 percent more energy efficient and 70 percent smaller than conventional systems. In addition, the Gen2 system provides many other benefits. Its flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts and gearless machine do not require any additional lubrication, making the system cleaner for the environment. The patented flat-belt drive technology virtually eliminates vibration, providing passengers a smooth, quiet ride and improved overall comfort. Flat belts enable a more compact elevator system, eliminating the need for a machine room and offering greater flexibility in building design.

Otis is also providing its EMS Panorama(TM) system, a Web-based application that enables building staff to monitor, control, report on and manage a full range of operational-critical elevator functions from any computer with an Internet connection. With this system, building staff can monitor elevator performance, security, traffic patterns, key equipment events and many other critical functions.

"We have had a very successful history with Trump properties, and we are pleased that our leading technology and environmentally responsible products have been selected for this landmark project," said Otis President Ari Bousbib.

Trump International Hotel & Tower, Toronto, is a joint venture between Donald J. Trump and Talon International Development Inc. Located at the corner of Bay and Adelaide in the heart of Toronto's financial district, the tower represents ultra-luxury living and features the only five-star hotel condominiums available for purchase in Toronto. The building was designed by the renowned Toronto-based firm Zeidler Partnership Architects.

Otis Elevator Company is the world's largest manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products including elevators, escalators and moving walkways. With headquarters in Farmington, Connecticut, Otis employs 63,000 people worldwide, offers products and services in more than 200 countries and territories and maintains 1.6 million elevators and escalators worldwide.
