Health/Medical: COMO calls on governments to protect children

Perth -/Medianet International-AsiaNet/ - Meningitis Organisations Worldwide Call on Asia Pacific Governments to Protect Children from Deadly Pneumococcal Disease.

Data presented last week at the 6th International Symposium for Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD-6) confirms that a universal pneumococcal vaccination programme would reduce the incidence of pneumococcal disease (PD) infection and save the lives of children.

Pneumococcal disease is the number one vaccine-preventable cause of death in children younger than 5 years of age.[1]

For the first time a significant collection of data about the health and economic benefits of the PD vaccination is available to Asia Pacific governments and health authorities, supporting the call for childhood vaccination programmes in all countries.

President of the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (COMO), Bruce Langoulant said, "With such powerful and persuasive data now available, I urge governments across the Asia Pacific to act swiftly and do everything they can to include a universal pneumococcal vaccination programme in their national immunisation schedule."

"By vaccinating our children against pneumococcal disease we have the ability to help protect not just children but the broader community and in particular parents and grandparents.

One paper presented at the symposium assessed the disease burden in children younger than five in South East Asia. It compared the number of cases of PD in the Western Pacific to this population and identified an alarming rate of vaccine preventable PD in South East Asia.

Currently, Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV-7, Prevenar), is the only vaccine to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease in infants and children younger than 24 months. Australia has seen a dramatic reduction since it was introduced in January 2005 and New Zealand has included PCV-7 as part of their national immunisation programme. The focus is now on the other countries across Asia Pacific.

"The Hong Kong Government has made significant progress towards achieving success. COMO congratulates them for taking the steps necessary towards the inclusion of the pneumococcal vaccine on their National Immunisation Programme. Let's hope they are the first of many other Asia Pacific countries to do so," said Langoulant.

"Now is the time for all health authorities to recognise the importance of protecting infants and young children against pneumococcal disease," said Langoulant.

About COMO The Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (COMO) was founded in September 2004, at the close of the first World Conference of Meningitis Organisations (WCMO). Attended by 43 delegates representing 20 meningitis and children's health organisations from 14 countries, the WCMO allowed attendees to learn and share best practices about education, awareness and support programs.

Encouraged by the information shared at the meeting, 20 meeting delegates formed COMO in order to help support the fight against meningitis globally by emphasizing the global burden of the disease and supporting the establishment of new meningitis and children's health organisations.

The Confederation of Meningitis Organisations' mission is to assist member organisations to be sustainable, identifiable and influential sources for information and support services for those people affected by meningitis in their regions and united in their endeavours globally through their membership of COMO, which is committed to the elimination of meningitis and
septicaemia.

Energy: Eltek Valere Green Power makes Asia debut at CommunicAsia

Eltek Valere Green Power System Makes Asia Debut at CommunicAsia 2008 High-Efficiency DC Power Systems Can Eliminate Tens of Thousands of Tons of CO2 and Save Carriers Millions of Dollars Annually

Singapore (BUSINESS WIRE) - Eltek Valere today announced it will make the Asian debut of its green product line - Flatpack2 HE - to wireless and fixed line service providers at CommunicAsia 2008. The exhibition is on from June 17-20th at Singapore Expo (Eltek Valere stand: Hall 4, 4G2-01).

The Flatpack2 HE DC power system is based on a new 2000-Watt rectifier module that offers 96 percent efficiency ? the highest in the industry. The rectifier cuts power losses in half compared with today's state-of-the-art power conversion technology, reducing the power consumption - and lowering operating costs - for telecom service providers.

"There is huge demand and limited availability of power in the region making the cost of electricity high, so bringing this high-efficiency product to Asia provides operators with a solution to improve their bottom line dramatically," said Kenneth Bodahl, Eltek Valere Managing Director for AsiaPac. "We have established a reputation as the leading solutions provider in the region. This will be enhanced by setting a new benchmark with regards to high efficiency and reduced emissions of CO2.""The need for DC power systems to push the envelope on efficiency and green features is acute as most of the power used by a carrier is provided by DC power systems," said Greg Fasullo, Chief Marketing Officer. "We believe Eltek Valere will lead the way and truly make this decade a green and profitable revolution in DC power systems."

It is estimated that the total power requirement to operate global telecommunication networks equals more than 1% of global energy usage, resulting in emission of approximately 130 million tons of CO2. About 60%-70% of this electricity powers the networks, supplied by DC power systems.

Flatpack2 HE rectifiers make use of new breakthroughs in resonant topology and digital control to dramatically boost efficiency above today's industry standard of around 90%-92%.
In addition, the use of digital controls means that total components for the system have been reduced by 40% increasing reliability.

The Flatpack2 HE rectifier has a wide operating temperature range (-40?C to 85?C), wide input voltage range (85-300Vac) and compact size, making it ideal for most telecom applications ? indoor and outdoor.

The Flatpack2 HE features a controller area network (CAN) bus interface to allow communication with our Smartpack Monitoring & Control Unit or to be integrated with customer control systems. The Smartpack provides full control and monitoring of rectifiers and other system components with multilevel access and comprehensive battery management through web, SNMP, SMS, e-mail or modem.

The Flatpack2 HE Rectifier Module 48/2000 is now available from Eltek Valere throughout Asia.

About Eltek Valere Eltek Valere, headquartered in Richardson, TX, was formed from the June 2007 merger of Eltek Energy and Valere Power. It is a $500 million provider of DC power systems to telecommunications and industrial markets worldwide. The company has more than 2,000 employees with offices in 25 countries and sales to more than 100 countries.

Shanghai, (ANTARA News/Xinhua-PRNewswire) - Sustainability ratings and index firm RepuTex, today announced an international 'A' rating for Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd, China's largest iron and steel maker.

The rating reflects the company's satisfactory progress in the development of effective sustainability practices.

Baoshan's 'A' rating places it in the top 7% of companies globally, and in the top 3% of companies in the China market.

"The company has established dedicated strategies to address strategic planning, environmental protection and audit.

"These strategies are backed by policy and systems, as well as compliance and oversight processes," said General Manager of RepuTex China, Martha Grossman.

Ms Grossman also expressed the view that Baosteel is well positioned to face a range of new challenges as market pressure continues to rise with respect to reduced carbon emissions.

Health/Medical: Doctors across Asia unite to prevent disease

Singapore - /Medianet International-AsiaNet/ - International Symposium Reinforces Need for Immediate Action to Prevent Pneumococcal Disease and Save Lives.

The Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumococcal Disease Prevention (ASAP) is calling on the Government of Taiwan to include Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV-7) (Prevenar) on the national immunization schedule as a matter of urgency.

Data presented last week at the 6th International Symposium for Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD-6) confirms that a universal pneumococcal vaccination program would reduce the incidence of infection and save lives.

This is in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) position paper, stating that PCV-7 (Prevenar) be included in the national immunization programs (NIPs) as a priority, particularly in countries where the mortality rate of children under five years is greater than 50/1000 live births, or where more than 50,000 die annually[1].

Pneumococcal disease (PD) is one of the most infectious killer diseases today[2]. Tragically, between 700,000 and 1 million children below five years old die as a result of PD each year. Every hour that ticks by, between 80 and 112 children die by the hand of this killer disease, or roughly between 1,900 and 2,700 child deaths a day around the world[3].

In developing countries around the world, PD is considered the first cause of children's death. Across Asia Pacific the burden of disease is high. Data presented at the symposium highlights the information available across the Asia Pacific
region relating to Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) infection and mortality rates.

One study of PD burden across Asian countries reported incidence of IPD among children younger than five years of age ranging from 30.9 cases per 100,000 in Japan to 276 cases per 100,000 in Bangladesh. Importantly, the data also highlight tht PCV-7 could help prevent between 57% and 91% of IPD cases in children younger than two years of age in Asia.[4]

Dr Lulu Bravo, Chairperson of ASAP said, "As doctors and parents, we know the devastating impact the death of a child has on everyone. But you might not be able to feel the pain and the loss, until it happens to your own child. Never before have we had such a body of evidence to prove to health authorities that they must act now and put an end to this unnecessary suffering."

Currently, PCV-7 is the first and only vaccine to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease in infants and children younger than 24 months. [5] It also helps to protect older children up to 9 years old.

Many health authorities have already recognized the importance of protecting infants and young children against PD.
The PCV-7 is available in 76 countries (as of January 2007) and is part of the routine national childhood immunization schedule in 17 countries worldwide.

Currently in Asia Pacific, only Australia and New Zealand have included the PCV-7 as part of its national immunization program.

"It is now time for the Government of Taiwan to embrace this data and implement change immediately to protect our children from this preventable disease," said Dr Bravo.

Background on Pneumococcal Disease (PD) Pneumococcal disease (which includes meningitis, pneumonia, bacteremia, and acute otitis media) is estimated to result in up to 1 million deaths each year in children, most of whom are in developing countries[6]. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) recently recommended that the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine be incorporated into immunization programs now, in view of the demonstrated vaccine efficiency and high disease burden, to help substantially reduce mortality and morbidity[7].

About Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumococcal disease prevention (ASAP)

ASAP was launched on December 14, 2007 and is the first and only grouping of healthcare professionals in this region formed to specifically focus resources on PD in Asia Pacific. It is the only Asian group to join the growing number of experts from international organizations like the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in the collective effort to raise awareness of infectious diseases like PD and its prevention. ASAP is affiliated to the global Pneumococcal Awareness Council of Experts (PACE) and the Asian Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ASPID). It also collaborates with other public health and pediatric groups to achieve its mission of containing and controlling pneumococcal disease in the Asia Pacific region through awareness, surveillance, advocacy and prevention.

ASAP is the first and only group of its kind in the region formed to specifically focus its resources on PD in the Asia Pacific. It is the only Asian group to join the growing number of experts from international organizations like the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in the collective effort to raise awareness of infectious diseases like PD and its prevention.

High-Tech: AlwaysOn Network Bangladesh deploys SOMA broadband wireless system

Nationwide Network brings affordable, robust internet access to primary schools and underserved areas

Singapore & San Francisco (BUSINESS WIRE) - AlwaysOn Network Bangladesh (AONB), a joint venture between Oregon-based AlwaysOn Network and an organization of nonresident Bangladeshi technologists, announced today the commercial launch of a new wireless network that will deliver free Internet access to Bangladesh primary schools and colleges, as well as competitively priced broadband services to underserved rural and urban areas. SOMA Networks' broadband wireless solution was found to outperform all other wireless access methods, making it the ideal technology to surmount the challenging deployment and environmental conditions in many regions throughout Bangladesh. The new nationwide telecommunications infrastructure is part of an agreement between AONB and the Bangladeshi government, in which the company will help bridge the digital divide and deliver high-speed wireless Internet service to education, government, private businesses and individuals across the country.

During rigorous live field trials in the capital city of Dhaka, AONB customers found the wireless broadband Internet service to deliver superior indoor, non-line-of-sight connectivity even during the most severe weather conditions, including frequent tropical storms. AlwaysOn Network, SOMA's first US deployment, had originally proven SOMA's technology in 2002, when the company launched service in the rugged, mountainous terrain of the US Pacific Northwest where inclement weather is also a major concern for service providers.

"We were already very familiar with SOMA technology through our US deployment so the company was the natural choice as our equipment provider in Bangladesh," said Dr. Reaz Shaheed, CEO and Managing Director of AlwaysOn Network Bangladesh. "Our vision is to offer the highest quality broadband Internet services throughout Bangladesh in order to make business opportunities more attractive to foreign companies seeking low cost, broadband dependent operations. To do this, the nation needs to grow its qualified workforce. By providing free wireless Internet services to connect every school and college in Bangladesh we can make the best educational resources available to everyone. SOMA's ability to provide, integrate and
validate a complete broadband wireless solution quickly, along with the best service coverage, has proven invaluable and will accelerate the realization of our vision.""As AlwaysOn's vendor of choice in the US and now in Bangladesh, we are proud to continue our commitment to deliver high throughput, high capacity and revenue-enhancing systems for our customers," said Yatish Pathak, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SOMA Networks. "SOMA's next generation broadband wireless systems continue to offer the industry's best business case. We are extremely pleased that our customers return to us for new deployments around the globe. By fostering our relationships with influential providers like AONB, SOMA continues to influence the rapid spread of broadband services in emerging economies and ensure the narrowing of the digital divide."

While promoting SOMA Networks' technology to its government customers, AONB cited the following key features of the 700 MHz FlexMAX Broadband Wireless System: approximately five times better penetration than any other wireless service; unrivaled non-line-of-sight access; the easiest subscriber self-installation and activation, eliminating expensive technician service calls and custom installations; industry-leading sector coverage and capacity with multi-megabit data rates; and continuing customer care via the Internet or telephone.

The growing Dhaka deployment continues to offer superb uninterrupted broadband Internet connections allowing both commercial and residential customers to enjoy high-speed wireless Internet connectivity that is easily installed without the need for technical support. AONB is very pleased by early sales and rapid market acceptance of their new wireless service.

AONB signed a MoU with the Government of Bangladesh to provide inexpensive Internet service throughout the entire country as well as free Internet access to all primary schools over the next 10 years. One of the main objectives of this agreement is to offer broadband services at a cost suitable to the existing local economy. These services are designed to accelerate the expanding economy and act as a catalyst for future development and overall growth of Bangladesh. Based on the success of the early trial, AONB has been awarded exclusive connectivity with select universities and hospitals in Dhaka.
Following the completion of the initial deployment, the network will expand to other cities and rural communities starting in
the third quarter 2008.

Companies across nations have strived to bring out their best and stay ahead of competition. In the past three years, we have seen home-grown companies operating on par with the global giants and this trend is likely to continue in future," adds Ms. Das.

The celebrated recipients go through a detailed evaluation process that starts with a short-listing of organisations by Frost & Sullivan's expert analyst team via an in-depth and independent research on the organisations' market performance.
