"Businesses throughout Asia and, in particular, Greater China, are positioning themselves to increase their market share through expanded global operations," said Robert Johnson, ESS President and CEO.

Research Reveals it's all rush hour in Beijing

It's all rush hour in Beijing as research reveals Chinese commuters are in a hurry

London (BUSINESS WIRE) - Beijing's commuters are setting the pace in China, says new research from pedestrian simulation software company Legion.

The Legion study reveals that pedestrians in the Chinese capital walk 10% faster than those in Hong Kong: 5.3 kph compared to 4.8 kph. In other words, in just 10 minutes, commuters in Beijing will walk over 90 metres further than their Hong Kong compatriots. That's almost the length of a football pitch.

The discovery of this substantial kph difference, one of a number of findings obtained from hundreds of hours of video recorded in Beijing metro stations, will prove invaluable for architects and designers building in bustling Chinese cities.

Accurate knowledge of walking speeds along with other behavioural data such as pedestrians' personal space preferences, enhances a designer's ability to predict how a building or urban space will perform. It informs critical design decisions about, for example, how wide corridors and pavements need to be or how many escalators or ticket gates are needed to minimise congestion and keep pedestrians flowing in well used spaces.

"Understanding how different types of pedestrians behave is critical to getting the design and operation of buildings and public spaces right," says Kevin Mannion, CEO of Legion. "And the speed at which people walk can have a major impact. Take a metro station, for example: understanding how long it will take people to arrive at the platform is essential for managing congestion and keeping people safe."

A team of experts from Legion studied users of Beijing's transport network as part of a project to create accurate models of Chinese commuters and Weekend railway users for their advanced pedestrian simulation software. Hundreds of hours of hi-resolution video footage were recorded at a number of Beijing metro stations. This provided a data set of thousands of pedestrians moving in different contexts within the stations. After extensive analysis using Legion's proprietary video processing software, the team derived profiles for the speeds of Chinese pedestrians under various conditions. These profiles will be added to Legion's software to complement existing pedestrian profiles.

Kevin Mannion added: "There is no such thing as a standard or global pedestrian. One size does not fit all. When you need to know how a pedestrian space will work in a particular part of the world, you need to have the measurement data from that part of the world. Otherwise, how can you have confidence in your simulations? We have previously studied pedestrians in Hong Kong, various cities in Europe, North America and South America, and designers using our software are able to build their simulations around different types of scientifically validated pedestrian. As our software is increasingly being deployed on projects in China, adding Chinese pedestrian profiles was a natural step in our development."

Legion's pedestrian simulation technology supports a more efficient design process. It enables designers to test proposed designs for, say, metro stations, airport terminals or arenas and to make any necessary changes before construction begins.

The new `Chinese commuter' and `Chinese weekend railway user' entity profiles will be included in Enhancement Pack 4 for Legion Studio which is released on 2nd April 2008.

About Legion

Legion is the company behind the world's most advanced and widely adopted pedestrian simulation software: Legion Studio and its accompanying animation software, Legion 3D. With its accurate, validated simulations, Legion is transforming how the world's built environment is designed, upgraded and operated.
Legion Studio enables designers and engineers to analyse and quantitatively assess the efficiency of different designs and strategies. As a result, Legion simulations inform critical decisions about improving the safety, operational effectiveness and profitability of places where people gather ? places like metro and surface rail stations, airports and sports venues.

Legion has offices in London, New York and Shanghai and a network of associates and partners serving a worldwide customer base. Users include some of the world's major transport authorities: Transport for London, MTR Hong Kong, Madrid's Consorcio Regional de Transportes, Spain's IENA, the Metropolitan Transport Authority in New York City, Rail Corp in Sydney, and Santiago Metro. Leading design and engineering firms, such as AECOM, Arup, Halcrow, Parsons Brinkerhoff and WS Atkins have used Legion Studio to offer new pedestrian engineering services. Legion Studio has also been used in planning the Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London Olympics.

In making its vision of "Anywhere, Anytime, Communications Enriching the Lives of People", a reality, FarEasTone aims to outperform its peers. This means broadening the appeal of current service offerings and actively developing innovative services for the benefit of consumers.

FarEasTone has adopted Comptel Provisioning and Activation Solution to register and deregister users on the network, and to allocate and de-allocate the services to them. FarEasTone is also using Comptel Convergent Mediation Solution to collect usage information to charge for these services.

FarEasTone have been using Comptel Convergent Mediation Solution and Comptel Provisioning and Activation Solution for more standard mobile services for a number of years now. They have built a real partnership with Comptel.

Mr. Mika Korpinen, Comptel's Vice President, APAC, concludes: "FarEasTone is a real pioneer, leading the way in using IMS to deliver appealing lifestyle services to their customers. The resulting continuous, seamless playback is perfect for creating a party atmosphere. With MixDJ, a phone or MP3 can provide a non-stop beat that keeps people moving.

MixDJ achieves this seamless effect by aligning the tempo and beat of the current and upcoming songs and then fading between them, just as would a professional live DJ. The software is easy to manage and once activated, the whole experience is automatic. MixDJ can also help users create playlists suitable for mixing, and created mixes can be saved and shared with friends.

MixDJ draws on NXP Software's deep know-how in mobile multimedia, playback control and its portfolio of optimized building blocks for audio enhancement. These strengths allow NXP Software to create innovative solutions like MixDJ, and SportsDJ, adding distinctive capabilities to mobile devices.

Japan`s University of Tsukuba selects Appro Xtreme-X Supercomputers

Milpitas, Calif., (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - Appro (http://www.appro.com), a leading provider of high-performance enterprise computing systems, announces today it has been awarded a contract for a 95TF Appro Xtreme-X(TM) Supercomputer for the Center for Computational Sciences at the University of Tsukuba, to be located in the center of Tsukuba Science City. The region is well known for its large concentration of advanced research institutions in various areas of science and technology. The Tsukuba award is a major breakthrough for Appro's supercomputers into the Japanese HPC market.

The University chooses Appro's Xtreme-X3 Supercomputer for its matchless Quad-Rail system interconnect, which provides the lowest-latency and the highest bandwidth performance to meet both capacity and capability computing requirements for Tsukuba's computational scientific research programs. The Appro Xtreme-X3 Supercomputer will be shipped and installed by Appro at the University by the end of May 2008.

Appro will partner with Cray Technical Services and Sumisho Computer Systems (SCS), a major IT trading company in Japan, to deliver the system and service to the Center for Computational Sciences at the University of Tsukuba. As the prime contractor, SCS combined both Appro HPC solutions while Cray TechnicalServices supplied local service and support, providing technical expertise for the installation and operation of the supercomputer. This agreement was based on a common goal of helping customers reduce complexity in deploying, managing and servicing their commodity High Performance Computing solutions, while lowering their total cost of ownership.

"Cray Technical Services has a distinguished history of successfully delivering large-scale HPC solutions to our government and commercial customers," said Mamoru Nakano, president of Cray Japan. "The University of Tsukuba is dedicated to elevating the international competitiveness of Japanese universities and is quickly becoming a world-class, internationally competitive institute of higher education. We welcome this opportunity to work with Appro to provide local support and service for this significant HPC Solution in Japan."

The Appro Xtreme-X3 will be used principally to provide needed computational support for scientific research and computer science programs covering a wide range of research and education areas, including artificial intelligence, massively parallel computing, and other leading-edge science and technology. The Department promotes researchers capable of analyzing and solving various problems in computer systems and specific research fields, including Information Mathematics and Modeling, Intelligent Software, Software System, Computer Architecture and Media Engineering.

"Appro has stepped into the HPC market limelight by winning contracts for large-scale systems at the U.S. Department of Energy's tri-labs and now at the University of Tsukuba, one of Japan's leading academic research institutions," said Steve Conway, IDC research vice president for HPC. "IDC projects that clusters will continue to be the main growth engines for the HPC market, driving server revenue from $10 billion dollar in 2006 to more than $15 billion in 2011."

The Xtreme-X3 supercomputer consists of a total of 674 quad-socket, Quad-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor-based compute nodes with 2,696 processors and a total of 10,784 processing cores. As configured, the computer has 95TF of computing capability, but can scale to up to 120TF and still be provisioned and managed as a single unified supercomputing system. Navigation Systems seriously undermine road safety

Software errors are being ignored

The Hague (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - Using a new research method, the Stichting Onderzoek Navigatiesystemen ("Navigation Systems Research Foundation") has discovered why navigation systems cannot find ring roads in cities. Software errors are the cause. The Foundation predicts a catastrophic development if the authorities do not intervene: more traffic accidents and casualties, and side roads becoming jammed with volumes of traffic for which they were not designed.

Almost none of the navigation systems tested take sufficient account of the hierarchy in the road network. As a result, motorists are unnecessarily being turned into 'kid killers' by being sent through designated low-traffic residential areas and roads which are not designed for through-traffic. The navigation systems do not appear to be able to find ring roads.

Software errors are the cause. TomTom blames the problem on the information supplied by the authorities, but that cannot be true, as Nav4All (a free navigation system for mobile phones) does in fact send motorists to their destinations via the appropriate roads.

A direct consequence of these software errors is that the automatic traffic jam avoidance features of TomTom and other navigation systems cause local roads to become jammed with volumes of traffic for which they were not designed and for which they are not suitable. This increases the number of traffic accidents and casualties, and disturbs the peace and the environment of residential areas.

The authorities have a responsibility to take action in good time. Systems which unnecessarily endanger road safety and the flow of traffic must be banned. At the moment, the problem is still relatively small, but in a few years time, when everyone is using navigation systems, the consequences will be incalculable.

Note to editors
The objective of the Navigation Systems Research Foundation is to carry out comparative research into the market for navigation systems, in order to increase market transparency, both nationally and internationally. In so doing, the Foundation aims to make a contribution to improving road safety.
