Technology: NTT Com to pilot test mobile fragrance communication service

Tokyo - Kyodo JBN-AsiaNet/ - NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced today that it will conduct a pilot test of its new Mobile Fragrance Communication (Kaori Tsushin Mobile) service, a mobile version of an existing service for enjoying downloaded audiovisual content together with specific fragrances that are emitted by a dedicated device. The pilot test will run from April 10 to 20.

First launched for home use in 2005, Fragrance Communication is now used by companies and individuals to enhance indoor environments with pleasing fragrances. The new mobile version offers the convenience of using mobile communication to download Fragrance Playlists, or files of recipes for specific fragrances together with visual (GIF animation) and audio (MIDI) content.

The Fragrance Playlists are downloaded from the i-mode mobile website of sister company NTT DoCoMo. Using the phone's infrared port, the fragrance data is transferred to a device that has been loaded with a cartridge of essences, or base fragrances. The device, a smaller, lighter and more stylish version of the previous model, then mixes the specific fragrances and emits them as the user enjoys the A/V content played back on their phone.

The Fragrance Playlists also can be edited as well as shared with others who subscribe to the service.

Also to be tested is a device controller, called the Service Gateway, which controls the operation of devices in the Mobile Fragrance Communication system.

The gateway connects with the Internet, so instructions can be sent remotely from a mobile phone. For example, commands could be sent to the gateway to instruct the fragrance device to begin operating just before the user arrives home.

In the pilot test, a total of 20 male and female monitors will each receive a free Mobile Fragrance Communication kit
containing a mobile phone and fragrance device. Five of the monitors will also be given Service Gateway modules. After using the service for ten days, the monitors will complete questionnaires and take part in a group interview. NTT Com will use the information to learn about the monitors' preferences for when, where and how to use the service, as well as their opinions of the fragrance device's design and usability.

NTT Com also announced today that it will begin accepting applications from companies in Japan that wish to develop content and applications for the forthcoming commercial version of the Mobile Fragrance Communication service, including:
- Ringtones, music or horoscopes combined with fragrances.
- Applications for housing, automotive, consumer electronics or videogame markets.

NTT Com joins new submarine cable consortium linking Asia, US

Tokyo - Kyodo JBN-AsiaNet - NTT Communications (NTT Com) today announced that it signed a construction and maintenance agreement to participate in a consortium building a new optical fiber cable system - the Trans-Pacific Express Cable Network (TPE) - that will link Japan, Mainland China, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.

TPE, a new submarine cable network that will use cutting-edge technology, is being built jointly by a consortium that now consists of NTT Com, AT&T, China Netcom (CNC), China Telecom (CT), China Unicom, Chungwha Telecom (CHT), KT and Verizon Business (Verizon).

In the fourth quarter of 2006 the six original consortium parti, cipants - CNC, CT, China Unicom, CHT, KT and Verizon - began constructing the southern route, which will direct link the United States and Asia, including Mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan, when it is scheduled to become operational in August 2008. The northern route transiting Japan will be developed under the project's second phase; the Japan-Asia section will become operational during the first quarter of 2009, followed by the Japan-U.S. section, completion of which is expected in early 2010.

The cable network will be more than 18,000 kilometers in length and have a maximum transmission capacity of 5.12 terabits per second.

NTT Com will establish and fully manage a new landing station in Japan at a site located near the Tokyo metropolitan area. The landing station will provide flexible connectivity to other major submarine cables in the region.

International communication-related traffic - such as Internet, voice, video and data - has been growing at an exceptional rate over the past few years. TPE will enhance NTT Com's existing ability to provide international capacity within the Asia-Pacific and trans-Pacific markets. NTT Com continues to deliver reliable services and meet customer's increasing demand for voice, video, and data communication.

NTT Com to establish representative office in Moscow

Tokyo Kyodo JBN-AsiaNet - NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced today that it will establish a physical presence in the Russian market by opening a representative office in Moscow on April 1.

The office, which will start with a staff of five, will engage primarily in researching the Russian telecommunications market and promoting NTT Com's wide variety of services for enterprise customers.

According to Kazuyoshi Terada, Vice President of Business Strategy, Global Business Division: "The NTT Communications Moscow Representative Office will strengthen NTT Com's ability to develop and serve multinational enterprise customers who require high-quality one-stop ICT solutions and network resources in the Russian market."

Russia has become an extremely attractive market for multinational corporations due to its rapid economic growth in recent years.

Its GDP in 2007 grew 7.6 %, led largely by non-tradable services and goods for the domestic market, as opposed to oil and mineral extraction and exports in recent years.

To meet the rising demand for network connection between the Far East and Europe, NTT Com and TransTelecom Company CJSC, Russia's leading backbone telecom operator, formed a partnership in February 2007 to establish a 500km high-capacity undersea fiber-optic cable.

The Hokkaido-Sakhalin Cable System (HSCS) has the capability of transmitting data at up to 640 gigabits per second between Ishikari, Hokkaido in Japan and Nevelsk, Sakhalin in Russia.
