Technology: Wavestream introduces 80-watt Ku-band matchbox block upconverter

Wavestream Corporation introduces 80-watt Ku-band matchbox block upconverter ideal for satellite news gathering services
Company debuts high-efficiency solid-state power amplifier at communicAsia in Singapore

Singapore (PRIME NEWSWIRE) - Wavestream Corporation (www.wavestream.com), a manufacturer of compact, highly efficient solid-state power amplifiers, today announced that it will showcase its new 80-watt Ku-Band Matchbox Block Upconverter (BUC) for a variety of commercial and military satellite communications applications at CommunicAsia, June 17-20, 2008 in Stand 6J1-01 at the Singapore Expo in Singapore.
The 80-watt Ku BUC is a highly efficient solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) and is ideal for satellite news gathering (SNG) applications, such as those highlighted at CommunicAsia.

Using Wavestream's Spatial Power Advantage(tm) technologies, the company has been able to pack 80 watts of output power at 1dB compression into a rugged 25-pound unit that can be mounted directly on the feed arm of medium aperture antennas, maximizing the power at the feed and further enhancing system-level efficiency. Measuring just 15" x 8" x 5", the compact BUC provides ample linear power for most high-definition satellite news gathering. Similar to Wavestream's other Matchbox Series BUC units, the new 80-watt Ku-band BUC provides the highest linear power per pound per unit volume in a versatile, easy-to-use solution.

"As satellite news trucks are getting smaller and many broadcast news outlets are looking at ways in which they can quickly send multiple reporters with their own equipment to breaking news scenes, we believe that the SNG market will eagerly adopt our 80-watt BUC," said Chris Branscum, CEO of Wavestream. "Given its compact size and benefits including power draw of less than 600W AC, which is starkly lower than other SSPAs, as well as soft-fail mode and graceful degradation, our new 80-watt BUC is poised to replace TWTAs especially in SNG environments. In addition, its high-efficiency and high-reliability characteristics make the Wavestream 80-watt BUC well-suited for a growing number of military applications for the Ku band."

Wavestream's 80-watt BUC provides high reliability to minimize life-cycle costs even in the most demanding applications and extreme environments. In addition, the BUC includes a choice of frequency bands (14.0 - 14.5 GHz or 13.75 - 14.5 GHz) with no performance degradation, L-band to Ku-band upconversion, serial or Ethernet monitor and control, adjustable attenuation and output power monitoring.
