In crisis, sites of Australia`s emergency services unavailable

Utrecht (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - With Bushfires in Western Australia's Goldfields region & floods in Mackay, Australia's emergency services are needed more than ever but many are unreachable.

WatchMouse, a leader in website performance monitoring, tested the sites belonging to Australian Emergency Services organisations for errors, availability & performance. Only one of the 26 monitored sites was found to have 'good' uptime while seven sites had 'serious user issues'. Another disturbing finding was that during the Mackay floods on the 15th of February, a time when residents needed information and support from their emergency services, Queensland's Ambulance, Fire (Rural & Metropolitan) and Police sites all encountered serious errors and were unavailable for considerable periods of time.

After a month's monitoring, WatchMouse combined the errors, speed (load time) and availability measurements of a site to calculate its Site Performance Index (SPI).

An SPI of less than or equal to 1000 represents a 'well performing' site, 1001 - 1999 is regarded as an 'acceptable' SPI while an SPI score of greater than or equal to 2000 represents a site with 'serious user issues'.

Of the 26 sites monitored, those with the worst SPI included that of the Australian Federal Police with an SPI 2,990, the Victorian Metropolitan Fire Brigade site with an SPI 2,756 and the Victorian Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority site which scored SPI 2,604. All of these poor SPI rankings were due to very slow load times.

In line with industry standards, WatchMouse ranks a site's uptime as 'good' if it is greater than or equal to 99.9 per cent, 'OK' between 99.89 per cent -- 99.01 per cent and 'poor' if it is less than or equal to 99 per cent.

Alarmingly, only the site of ACT Rural Fire Brigade had a 'good' uptime result. The majority of sites ranked as 'OK' while three Emergency Services' sites ranked as 'poor'. The site with the lowest uptime was that of WA's Ambulance Service with 92.44 per cent.

WatchMouse CTO, Mark Pors said, "99 per cent uptime sounds great but when you actually calculate it, this means 80+ hours of downtime a year. That's one working day per month! The Emergency Services phone lines could not be down for a day each month so why is it acceptable for the site? Mackay represents a small proportion (approx. 4 per cent) of Queensland's total population but given that the sites of Queensland Emergency Services struggled during the Mackay floods, we can only imagine what will happen to those sites in the case of a disaster on a greater scale, when 100s of thousands of people attempt to visit."

Australian interactive ad revenues to reach US$2.9 bln by 2012

Princeton, N.J., (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - The global advertising market grew to just over US$600 billion in 2007, according to The Kelsey Group, the leading provider of research, data and strategic analysis on directional and interactive local media.

The firm expects global ad revenues to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7 per cent and reach US$707 billion in 2012, propelled in large part by considerable growth in the interactive segment.

According to "The Kelsey Group's Annual Forecast (2007-2012): Outlook for Directional and Interactive Advertising," interactive advertising revenues will increase significantly from US$45 billion in 2007 to US$147 billion globally in 2012, representing a 23.4 per cent CAGR.

In Australia, interactive advertising revenues will grow from US$1.2 billion in 2007 to US$2.9 billion in 2012 (20.5 per cent CAGR).

"It's no surprise that the global advertising industry is experiencing a full-scale shift to mixed-media platforms, with interactive driving a significant share of overall industry growth," said Matt Booth, senior vice president, Interactive Local Media, The Kelsey Group.

"We see Internet development - including increased subscriber/user access and broadband penetration - as a driver of both interactive advertising revenue as well as migration of traditional ad spending to new media platforms."

Interactive advertising, which comprises search (including local search), display advertising, classifieds and other interactive ad products, grew its share of global advertising revenues from 6.1 per cent in 2006 to 7.4 per cent in 2007. By 2012, Kelsey Group analysts expect the interactive share of global ad spending will reach 21 per cent.

The Kelsey Group forecasts directional advertising, which comprises local search, print Yellow Pages and Internet Yellow Pages (IYP), will grow from US$33.3 billion in 2007 to US$41.4 billion globally in 2012 (4.5 per cent CAGR).

In Australia, directional advertising revenues will grow from US$1.3 billion in 2007 to US$1.8 billion in 2012 (6.7 per cent CAGR).

Valimo`s Mobile Signature Solution demonstrated in Australia

Helsinki, (ANTARA News/PRNewswire-AsiaNet) - Valimo has successfully conducted a Proof of Concept (POC) of its Mobile Signature Solution using one of Australia's largest Mobile Network Operators. The POC took place throughout the second half of 2007 and was primarily targeted at the country's financial industry.

The demonstration was facilitated through the hosting telco and Westpac's venture known as 'Trust Centre.' Mobile Signatures were demonstrated to five of the six largest banks in the country, two government departments, and several members of the Australian banking and finance industry.

As stated during the project by Mr. Mark Beaumont, former chief information technology architect at Trust Centre's, "The concept is pretty simple. It's what it can be used for that's exciting. Wherever a handwritten signature was traditionally required, this solution can replace that process."

"The bank is capable of sending an encrypted message to the user - not even the telco that transported that message could read it," Mr Beaumont said. "The user signs that message and it is then sent back to the bank with the user's signature on the end", he says. (1)

So if you can send a short message with your mobile phone, you can use Valimo's solution for strong and two-factor authentication based on Public Key encryption.

Valimo's mobile signature solution combats identity theft and online fraud:

"Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in Australia and it's costing the country an estimated $3.5 billion a year. That's about 20 per cent of what Australian companies spend on information technology on a yearly basis. The percentage of Australians concerned about misuse of personal information stands at 59 per cent, with war and terrorism trailing by 7 per cent." (2)

In 2007, Valimo delivered a complete mobile signature service infrastructure to Turkcell. Already 13 banks in Turkey allow their retail customer's to use Turkcell's MobilImza ("Mobile Signature Service") to authenticate themselves for online banking and to digitally sign bank transactions.

The participating businesses have integrated their existing systems to enable mobile signature services in a matter of weeks and this shows how straightforward such integration projects have been. Valimo would like to share this experience.
